What Are Crowns and Bridges—and When Are They Needed?
Crowns and bridges are common treatments used to rebuild, protect, or replace teeth. Whether you’ve experienced decay, injury, or tooth loss, these custom-made restorations can restore both function and appearance, allowing you to bite, chew, and smile with greater confidence.
What Is a Crown?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that completely covers a damaged or weakened tooth. Crowns are used to:
- Protect a tooth with a large cavity when there isn’t enough natural structure left to fill
- Restore a broken or severely worn-down tooth
- Reinforce a tooth after a root canal
- Improve the appearance of a misshapen or discolored tooth
- Top a dental implant to replace a missing tooth

Crowns can be made from several materials, including porcelain, ceramic, resin, or metal alloys. Porcelain and ceramic crowns are often chosen for their natural appearance, especially for front teeth, while metal-based options offer strength and durability for molars.
The process typically takes two visits. During the first, the tooth is reshaped and an impression is taken. A temporary crown is placed while your custom crown is made. At the second visit, the permanent crown is fitted, adjusted, and cemented into place.

What Is a Bridge?
A dental bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth. It’s made up of two or more crowns—called abutments—that anchor to the natural teeth (or implants) on either side of the gap. In between these anchors, a pontic, or artificial tooth, fills the space.
Bridges help:
- Restore your ability to chew and speak clearly
- Maintain the shape of your face by preventing bone loss and facial sagging
- Prevent remaining teeth from shifting out of position
- Distribute bite forces evenly across your teeth
There are several types of bridges, including traditional, cantilever, Maryland (resin-bonded), and implant-supported bridges. Your dentist will recommend the best type based on the location of the missing tooth, the condition of neighboring teeth, and your overall oral health.
Like crowns, bridges usually require multiple appointments and involve impressions, temporary restorations, and a final fitting. With good oral hygiene and regular dental care, a bridge can last many years.
Implant Restorations
If you’ve received a dental implant, the final step is placing a custom restoration on top—usually a crown or bridge—that completes your smile and restores full function. At Advanced Dental Arts, we craft implant restorations that look and feel just like natural teeth.
We work closely with your oral surgeon (or handle referrals ourselves) to ensure a smooth, well-coordinated process. Once your implant has healed, we’ll design a restoration that fits precisely, matches your bite, and blends beautifully with the rest of your smile.
Whether you need a single crown or a bridge supported by multiple implants, we’ll guide you through every step with comfort, clarity, and care.
Why Crowns and Bridges Matter
Missing or damaged teeth are more than a cosmetic issue—they can seriously affect your oral and overall health. Gaps left by missing teeth may lead to bite misalignment, shifting of surrounding teeth, gum disease, and difficulty chewing. Weakened teeth that go untreated can break further or become infected, potentially leading to tooth loss.
Crowns and bridges are long-established, practical solutions that restore the look of your smile and protect your oral function. They’re a preventive measure as much as a restorative one, helping to avoid more complex problems down the line.
Taking Care of Your Crowns and Bridges
Good oral hygiene is essential for maintaining crowns and bridges:
- Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
- Floss carefully around the restoration (we can show you how to use floss threaders or water flossers if needed)
- Avoid chewing hard foods or ice on the restored tooth
- Visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and checkups
Even though crowns and bridges are durable, they can still wear down or fail without proper care. Consistent maintenance and follow-up will help extend the life of your restoration and keep your mouth healthy.
